[ COMMON & DJ IRIE ] 944 Magazine NBA Allstar Afterparty

I’ve never seen a hip hop performance by anyone before, but holy hell is it an experience. Recording artist COMMON performed with DJ IRIE at Ghostbar for the 944 Magazine NBA Allstar After-party on Sunday. I was lucky enough to get a press pass to cover the event, and it was nothing short of amazing. The rhythm of the room (not to mention obscene amount of basketball players, celebrities, and people) was something I haven’t seen since Mickey Avalon played at Ghostbar late last year. Common has always been a pick of mine when it comes to hip hop, his musical genius is unique and has the power to make you move and smile, it was definitely the highlight of the night. Nobody Can Fill Kobe’s Shoes

In a shocking turn of events, everyone seems to be on Kobe’s you-know-what these days. First, The New York Times publishes an article claiming Kobe has been rival-less his entire career; Then, Shaq goes on the record by tweeting “I want kobe bryant to get number four, spread da word”; Even Mr. President himself goes on the record picking the Lakers, in six. But of course leave it to a journeyman nerd from Guadeloupe (where?) to make waves by deciding to ditch his Kobe sneaks in favor of Jordans. You know what Mickael Pietrus, good — you didn’t deserve to wear them anyways. Ironically, Kobe will be rivaling MJ’s legacy while dropping dimes on some ugly dude wearing #23′s kicks. The NBA — where “in your eye” happens.

H-Town Here We Come!

I have never been to Houston before (for a few reasons which we can discuss later) but for a Lakers playoff game you can get me to go almost anywhere. That said, tomorrow Gilberto and I are headed to see the Lakers pound down on the Houston Rockets in the second round of the playoffs. The series is tied 1-1.

Above is a view from our seats. If you are sitting in our section, after the first few minutes you will definitely feel extreme anxiety overcome you, followed by extreme anger, and eventually deep frustration. I cant wait to see y’all tomorrow! Section 124 baby.

I am casual fan of the basketball. Of course, my passion is soccer and no team in the world for me is like Olympique Lyonnais…best team in the world for me, easy. But everyone here in France loves Mr. Tony Parker. All day “Tony Tony Tony” so I begin watching some years ago, and Spurs win alot, so I watch more and more. No problem.

This year, so upset. I watch but german bitch Dirk and Maveriks beat them alot every year I feel. I dont know what happen this year and I stay up until 6 in morning with my girlfriend Véronique to watch, and of course they lose. Hopefully no more “Tony Tony Tony” and they go back to Texas and shutup forever! I have big day today, taking my new camera to the streets. Jean-Jacques is excited for the new blog. Un Amour!

NOT COOL: Marko Jaric Accused of Sexual Assault

This man is Marko Jaric, an NBA journeyman (see: SCRUB), that currently resides somewhere on the Memphis Grizzlies bench. Now I don’t want to jump to conclusions, this is just an accusation, and we are all innocent until proven guilty. But let me show you what’s not cool about this situation. Meet Adriana Lima (below). She is Mr. Jaric’s wife. This bares repeating. Marko Jaric married Adriana Lima. A month ago. If you follow sports, this would be like winning the Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup, NBA Championship and the Triple Crown (just for good measure) all in the same year. Guess what else Mr. Jaric did this month? Possibly sexually assaulted a girl in Philadelphia. Let me share a small fact with you: this girl, whoever it was, was NOT as ridiculously over-the-top sexy as his wife. How dare he? This fucking guy is the loser of the century. I don’t care how this turns out. But in case you were wondering I hope: the charges are true, he goes to jail, gets raped (multiple times) and gets divorced while in her sorrow, Adriana meets a tall handsome self-proclaimed ‘doc’tor and the two live happily ever after.

What can I say? I’m a romantic.

The other night during the halftime show of the Hornets and Pistons game things got very interesting when the stunt guy messes up while attempting a dunk off of a trampoline. The poor stunt guy hits his face against the rim and gets a scream out of the crowd. The funniest part is Rasheed Wallace in the clip (unrelated) looks as if hes throwing his towel at the stunt guy.

A few years ago, when Shaquille O’Neal was still a Laker, he and Jamie Foxx hosted a celebrity roast for the then-recently retired NFL superstar Emmitt Smith in Las Vegas. Numerous comedians, mostly black, ripped on or tried to rip on Emmitt & Co. but only one man — one white, Jewish man — stole the whole damn show: Jeff Ross. When someone asks me what the funniest stand-up act I HAVE EVER SEEN IS, this is the only thing that comes to mind. Hands down. Watch and die.

The Nuances of a Man-Crush

I have a man-crush, and I’m not afraid to say it. He is the coolest guy I have ever met. OK, so I haven’t really ever met him but I feel like I know him. I’ve watched his performances, his interviews, all of his commercials, and I even wear his jersey to sleep when I’m lonely. I can even tell when he’s gotten a haircut just by a quick glance. I love Nike, he is Nike’s main man (sorry Bron). I love FC Barcelona, he’s practically their coach. I love the Lakers, Kobe bleeds purple and gold. I loved “Inside Man,” Kobe is doing a documentary with Spike Lee. And just when you thought there was trouble in Lakerland, homeboy goes off for 61 points and breaks (yet another) Jordan record. See where I am going with this? Kobe Bryant is the world’s coolest dude, and I love him.

Shaq. The Diesel. Shaq Fu. The Big Daddy. Superman. Osama Bin Shaq. The Big Banana. The Big Cactus. The Big Shaqtus. The Big Baryshnikov. The Big Aristotle. And of course, The Big Crybaby Bitch. All in all, Shaquille O’Neal has had his fair share of self-imposed nicknames over the years.

And now, folks, he goes by a new name: Shaq-ovich. Now that shit is funny. Riding a 12-12 streak at the free throw line that ended last night, Shaq explained his new nickname as such: “If you go around the league, anybody with the last name ‘vich’ is a great shooter … Radmanovic, Vujacic … all those ‘iches.’” (Hmmmm…wonder why he used two Lakers as examples…exactly!) Still a bit butt-hurt over the whole Lakers divorce, but can’t stop laughing at this one.

So i just made it back to LA tonight after 5 days in Mammoth…no snow bunnies but the Lakers Celtics game was epic and although i lost $200 on the over under it was well worth every penny. Tonight I am ready to see what LA has to offer and very much in need of a good night out after being subjected to what Mammoth had to offer. I will be heading down to Hyde later to see Dj AM and Dj Marshall Barnes… as always I will keep you posted.

Cool Shoes?: Nike Zoom Kobe IV

Inspired by the strain soccer players put on their ankles when out on the “pitch,” Kobe (Cool Guy) and Nike have created the lightest (11.6 oz) and LOWEST basketball shoe ever. Ok, here’s my problem: I understand Kobe is an avid soccer fan, and on the surface his reasoning for creating a low-top sound almost reasonable (jump higher, run faster, quicker cuts, the extra edge normal bball clunkers won’t give you). But thinking about it more and more, this is completely insane. Soccer players don’t jump around with 6’8″ athletic freaks and their size 18 shoes for a living. The run on a huge grass field which gives, unlike hardwood. Plus their shoes are outfitted with spikes. Now Nike has packed enough innovative performance technology into these babies you would think they were made by NASA. But the simple truth is I’m a huge Laker fan, and as Kobe goes, so go the Lakers…and I am not prepared to put my dreams inside a fucking low-top. Otherwise they are sick and I love them. So the Lakers once again defeat the Dallas Mavericks after another disappointing loss where the Mavs held on to the lead for nearly the entire game… until Kobe Bryant aka The Black Mamba decided to take over. Our new favorite player is Trevor Ariza who has consistently come out with energy and authority, Ariza was scoreless in the first half and was 7-12 in the 2nd half and scored 15 points.
