What a weekend! FUNFUNFUNFEST was nothing short of a good time for the HELLOx6 Austin crew. Los and I ran around the entire time catching as many shows as we could squeeze in as well as meeting and talking to a good number of the artists participating this year backstage. We are proud to announce the winner of the FFF Fest Contest. Here is his comment:

I should win the tickets because I will be a noble diplomat between HELLOX6 and the Fun Fun Fun Festival. I will keep my language clean, my attire crisp and free of stains, and my blood clear of the toxins that plague so many festivals of music. I will clap only when appropriate, and exhibit an emotional response to the audio stimuli at just the right times. In between musical appointments, I will work to clear the grounds of any debris left by less courteous festival goers and assist in any matters for which I am capable. The Fun Fun Fun Festival executive team will likely take note of this behavior and reciprocate favorably towards the HELLOX6 organization.**

Florene SXSW HELLOX6 BACKYARD BLOWOUT

Sorry for the late post on this as the file was huge. Florene was by far one of my favorite bands this year at SXSW, and we were lucky enough to have them play at our backyard blowout party. I ran into the main guy at the Jessica 6 show in Denton right after SXSW, and I have to say he is mad cool. These guys are out of Denton and a must see if you are local.

[Cross Processed] The Cathedral of Junk

Today my wonderful neighbor JC and I headed over to south Austinite Vince Hanneman’s Cathedral of Junk upon hearing there was a chance it was going to be dismantled due to a recent code violation. In order to maintain proper sound structure, generous volunteers have been coming by the Cathedral to lend a helping hand in reinforcing the entire place. Home Depot has also played a part in helping Vince by donating heavy duty gloves, pliers, goggles and a variety of other tools to the Cathedral for the volunteers to use. Today we put our gloves on and used scrap wiring to help reinforce parts of the amazing structure. In between working hard in the sun, I of course snapped a couple photos of the complete randomness incorporated into the establishment. The place has been around for approximately 22 years and is built with nothing but junk/toys/Cds/car parts/typewriters/and anything else you can possibly think of. It is truely a work of art and hopefully the people of Austin will help preserve it in time.

[Music Friday] The Happen-Ins

“Abandoned by their maternal mother, The Blues, and forced to suck off the withering teat of R&B, the Happen-Ins were birthed unto the blistering heat of an East Austin garage with little hope or means of survival. Weathering the extreme circumstances through clever wordplay and hip shaking tomfoolery, the Happen-Ins bested fire with fire…” At least how these dudes describe themselves.

To me, The Happen-Ins are Blues-y folk-y Texas rock at its grimiest — and their newly-released CD kept me shaking my booty the entire 4 hour ride down to Fayetteville, Arkansas yesterday. Download two of my favorite track from their album, Baby and Just The Way It Always Was, and get the rest on iTunes. And just so you know, I am obsessed with their LP cover (below).

Recently I had the privilege of working with some wonderful individuals in Austin on a feature dedicated to 4 female Austin bloggers (me being one of them!): Miss Esti Choi, who runs Buy Definition (a high-end clothing boutique) and coordinated the blogger feature; Andrew Chan, a super talented fashion/commercial/wedding photographer shot us at The Cathedral of Junk; and Jenny Ung, a creative Polaroid photographer took some great polaroids of us behind the scenes. Cross The Process

Upon my recent return to Austin from Dallas- where I mingled with my fellow helloooooo-ers- I picked up 6 rolls of 120 slide film that I shot with my Holga and had cross processed. Now for those of you unfamiliar with this term, all it consists of is taking exposed slide film and developing it in a chemical solution intended for a different type of film. The results show color shifts, high contrast, and in the Holga’s case – lots of light leakage onto the film. Not having shot with my Holga for a couple of months, I was extremely eager to see what came out. Here’s one I took in Giddings, TX at a peanut factory just a couple weeks ago.

VEGA was undoubtedly a super fun fantastic show at the Cavern as well. Cant wait to see these boys TONIGHT in Austin with the Golden Filter at Beauty Bar. If you are in the A-town tonight there are no excuses not to stop by.

I have been waiting to download this track since I saw Aoki and Barnes DJ at SXSW at the 508 house. I re-posted the original video from the DIM MAK party below.
