Came across these RIDICULOUS creations on Alexandra Nechita’s blog today and cannot stop browsing — to quote ‘the doc,’ the questions isn’t which ones but how many. The process? Dice are physically manually on the bed of a press, and the ink is applied directly onto the die for each impression. Stukenborg, I salute you!

I traveled to Dubai to work at an art fair and get a taste of the local culture.  When I arrived in Dubai I was excited to try local foods, meet local people, and discover some local artists.  This proved to be a challenging task – as most of Dubai is heavily influenced by western culture.  As one ex-patriot working in Dubai put it – Dubai is a lifestyle – not a culture.  I almost believed these words until one day while working at the big commercial fair Art Dubai, a lone wanderer with a long beard and a wise old face tapped me on the shoulder.

He leaned in and whispered to me “This art is not local – you can see this anywhere, want to see the real Dubai? want to get a taste of the real local culture?  Head to Bastakiya – there you will find what you are looking for.” Before I could ask any more questions – he was gone.  but his words lingered in my ear – so I ran out of the fair, hopped in the nearest cab, and told the driver “head to Bastakiya.”

He dropped me off on a decrepit old street and pointed forward.  I got out of the cab and headed into a cultural paradise – I had discovered the real Dubai.

Dirty fisherman gathered at a pier, their boats freshly docked from Iran.  Across the canal their were clusters of old buildings many housing local merchants – woven into this mix were also several local art galleries who showcase local emerging talent.

The day started out with a press preview attended by all walks of media life, I mixed and mingled with press superstars from NYT,  BBC World News, Vogue, Paper Mag, just to name a few.

That evening the fair open for the lucky few who held “collectors circle” gold VIP cards.  And by few I mean a couple thousand of the best dress people from all over the world.

After several hours of drinking free champagne, I built up the liquid courage to try and sneak my way into the Harper’s Bazaar after party.  The party, apparently the hottest ticket around, had even most sophisticated VIPS groveling for tickets.  Maybe it was my blonde hair or the fact that the fact that I said “Ya’ll sure my name isn’t on the list?” – I managed to sneak in.  On the roof top of Madinat Jumeriah overlooking the beach, with a fully stocked top shelf open bar, art world A- listers (and me hehe!) danced until the wee hours of the morning.

It was an glamerous 24 hours – almost like stepping into a fairy tale – but wait I didn’t even get a chance to see the art! Thank god the fair continues all week.  It will take me a good couple of days to nurse this hangover – I can’t figure out is my head still spinning because of the 4am crown & sodas or the fact that I shared the dance floor with Hans Ulrich Orbist (or so I think, his name was on the hush-hush guest list)

But now its back to reality – time to put in another long day of assisting VIP relations – which means hanging out at the beach all afternoon making sure everyone is enjoying their afternoon – I could get used to this job

One of my favorite pictures from this weekend, I think I took this at Wall nightclub in Miami.

Zooming around Flickr the other day I came across these really detailed pieces of inked illustrations.  I was amazed when I started looking at some of the girl’s pieces, they must have taken days to complete each one.  How she intertwines all the different things to make one large picture is amazing!  The artist’s name is Meyoko, look very closely at the figure’s ear which forms a woman’s face.  www.meyoko.com

On Saturday I went to see Mickey Avalon/Beardo perform and though I’ve never even seen Mickey Avalon before, I was definitely impressed by not only him but the whole show! Beardo opened up for him to start the show around midnight.  Never seen him before either, but he looks strangely similiar to the guy that was in that band with Cisco Adler before Swayze and they had a reality show on VH1 called The Rock Life, haha.  Mickey came on and that’s when it got crazy. I’ve never seen Ghostbar so full before. When I was behind Mickey a few times to take a shot, I’d look at the crowd and it was faces as far as I could see. The two women on stage with him were doing theatrical dancing with some amazing choreography — not to mention they were hot too!

The 2nd photo shoot which was planned for this past weekend was cancelled due to a headache I couldn’t get over all weekend. With the temperature hitting 105 degrees in Dallas all last week it felt like we were in the depths of hell. So due to the delay I present to you the final photos from last month shoot with Bekka and Marisol. Special thanks to Dagnushka again for the amazing pictures. Upon my recent visit to Marfa I visited what the small town is known most for – the CHINATI foundation. Fort D.A Russell was once home to a old military base in 1911 and has since been converted into a contemporary art museum. The CHINATI is dedicated to preserving and showing very large-scale installations. When it initially opened to the public in 1986 it was to exhibit the work of Donald Judd, John Chamberlain and Dan Flavin. The collection has now expanded and includes 15 outdoor concrete works by Donald Judd, 100 aluminum works by Judd housed in two converted artillery sheds, 25 sculptures by John Chamberlain, an installation by Dan occupying six former army barracks, and works by Carl Andre. The Chinati also includes Ingólfur Arnarsson, Roni Horn, Ilya Kabakov, Richard Long, Claes Oldenburg,Coosje van Bruggen, David Rabinowitch, and John Wesley. Each artist’s work is installed in a separate building on the museum’s grounds. Temporary exhibitions feature modern and contemporary art of diverse media.

One of the most impressive installations was the neon light by Dan Flavin. These large-scale, colored fluorescent light installations are located in six buildings which used to serve as old army barracks as mentioned before. Two parallel tilted corridors are constructed at the connecting arms of each U-shaped building. These corridors contain light barriers that are placed either in the center or at the end of each corridor. They consist of eight foot-long fluorescent light fixtures occupying the entire height and width of each corridor. The tubes are installed with space in between them, allowing one to view through the barriers. Each fixture holds two differently colored bulbs shining in opposite direction. The barriers in the six building utilize four colors: pink, green, yellow and blue. The first two buildings use pink and green, the next two yellow and blue, and the last two bring all four colors together.

As its founder Donald Judd wrote:

It takes a great deal of time and thought to install work carefully. This should not always be thrown away. Most art is fragile and some should be placed and never moved again. Somewhere a portion of contemporary art has to exist as an example of what the art and its context were meant to be. Somewhere, just as the platinum iridium meter guarantees the tape measure, a strict measure must exist for the art of this time and place.

Our dear friend Mallori Morris is having her debut art show this Thursday and Friday at my townhouses in Uptown Dallas. I have had the privilege of seeing her previous work and must say she is quite the artist. There will be live music by a harmonica player, valet parking will be provided, and hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be served. Should be a great time, made obvious by the ridiculous 3-D invitation above. Hope to see you all there.

Out of ideas for what to do for that special someone on Valentine’s Day? With the traditional Day of Love only two weeks away, why not do something more…Muniz? Vik Muniz to be exact. The artist most famously known for his work with PB&J, spaghetti, sugar, wire, thread, and most importantly, chocolate, has found a way to make this Valentines Day more interesting. His astonishingly creative works — such as a replica of DaVinci’s Mona Lisa using peanut butter and jelly, portraits of sugar plantation workers done with sugar, and images of both Sigmund Freud and The Last Supper made with chocolate — demonstrate how creative one can be with common, household items. So take those tacky red-ribboned chocolates for your lady/man and draw a masterpiece with them! Nothing says I love you like a chocolate portrait :)

Marfa, Texas: A unique little town, and I do mean little, that happens to explode with wonder and feed the curious eye. Home to not only a handful of interesting art exibits and museums, the town is also known for the mysterious globes of dancing lights that can be seen off in the distance of the mountains, called the Marfa Lights. Although scientists search for a true explanation of these globes, there are only theories that yearn to be proved. Some say they are only “dancing spirits” while others blame the phenomenon on the reflection of headlights from the small highway next to the mountains. Having seen these lights with my own eyes, I was nothing more than emotionally and spiritually moved. I threw science out the door and simply enjoyed watching the existence of these  dancing, flickering, and flashing bubbles. Now, for all you fashionistas out there, I’m sure you’ll be thrilled to know about the Prada store located just 10 miles outside of Marfa. However, this is not your ordinary Prada resort. It only consists of left shoes and a couple of handbags. ::sigh:: The store unfortunately only serves as an art installation that people come to see from far and wide. Too bad for the Prada thief who broke in not too long ago… guess he didn’t get the Memo. (More photos after the jump)
