I said good day, sir!!! Yet another MUSIC FRIDAY early, my friend. Heading to LA on Friday so I put this weeks together in advance. I’m on a bit of a summer soundtrack roll these days so hopefully we can all benefit from that. This one evolves like the day does from morning to beddy-by. It works it’s way through the first 10 tracks with a more mystic indie kind of attitude as well as a  few electro pop cuts sprinkled in. It’s filled with catchy lil numbers and jammy guitar fueled spiderwebs, as well as a few trancy tom-tom thumbing tantrums. Enough to mess up your buddies ironic facial hair. In the distant future where a corrupt, crime-thirsty legal system rules outer space with a titanium fist, the last hope for our galaxy lies on the shoulders of one man, Gripp Handalsun (Treat Williams).  Armed only with his good-looks, a laser-proof briefcase, and a hunger for justice, Gripp must come face-to-face with the underbelly of space law. Now, in the most harrowing case of his life, Gripp takes on the menacing Prosecutor X5000 (Wesley Snipes), the only District Attorney in the Galaxy with a biracial chip on his shoulder the size of Jupiter.  Descended from an African-American father and Robotic-American mother, X5000’s courtroom tactics are as icy cold as the blood and oil mixture running through his veins.  Together with the evil Judge George Jurj (Brian Dennehy), X5000 devises new ways to bend the law to its breaking point.  Even the hapless Bailiff-209 (Jeff Goldblum) is under the spell of Judge Jurj and the afro-cyborg prosecution.  At every turn, defeat seems certain, until Gripp must come to grips with some of his own inner demons in outer space.   Will the long robotic arm of the law finally bring justice to the galaxy or will Gripp find himself on the wrong side of the law . . . of gravity? 3D has been an on-again, off-again trend since the 1950’s. It was huge in the 50’s, then, it faded into obscurity. The 80’s saw a revival in 3D with the likes of Friday the 13th Part III, Jaws 3-D, and Captain EO. It popped up now and then through the 90’s. But the 2000’s have seen the most significant showing of 3D products yet (Avatar, ESPN 3D, Taschen 3D books, etc.). Many argue that 3D is finally here to stay. Even heavy hitters in the music biz have been jumping on the bandwagon, with Pitchfork recently producing its own Pitchfork 3D series. So, this [Music Friday] I’ve included a few recent stand-outs in the new wave of 3D. Slip on your red and blue lenses and enjoy.

Have you ever ridden a pegasus? I did once when I was young. Not only was it a mythological creature I was riding, but it was the rarest kind of pegasus. This one in particular was born with NO wings. I know…awesome right! Well this week I have not only a playlist, but what I call a “mixlist.” All the songs are connected in some way or another like a DJ mix. I wouldn’t call it a DJ mix cause it isn’t a dance mix it twists and turns through funky, electro, spacy, fast and slow. Below you can listen to the whole mix in one track while you are downloading the entire playlist. It’s accomplished by piecing together thousands of still shots as the subjects are slightly moved between each shot, in order to give the appearance of animation when all of the still frames are played in sequence.  It’s a painstaking process that can take hours of work just to produce a minute of film.  Over the years, as CGI has become cheaper and more user friendly, stop-motion animation has become more of a novelty than a necessity for animation.  Here is a look at some of the best uses of this technique in music video, new and old:

Fujiya & Miyagi- Ankle Injuries (Directed by Wade Shotter)

This video was shot using a few thousand dice and many hours of filming.  And yes, it was all done by hand.  Similar in style to Gondry’s LEGO video for the White Stripes, but here, the imagery created with only color and dots is amazing.

Millionyoung- Replicants  (From two short films by George Pal)

And you thought all of those “grainy home movie” chillwave videos were old-school?  All you chillwavers just got old-schooled.  This video was artfully pieced together from two films by George Pal, Hoola Boola (1941) and South Sea Sweethearts (1943).

Björk- Isobel  (Directed by Michel Gondry)

Michel Gondry has a reputation for creating wonderfully dream-like videos with a mise-en-scene built around skewed perspectives and overlapping realities.  Most of his videos use bits of stop-motion.  Probably his best known stop-motion video was The White Stripes’ “Fell in Love with a Girl”.  For “Isobel” though, he shows how beautifully creative he can make this technique.

His Name Is Alive- Are We Still Married? (Directed by The Brothers Quay)

The Brothers Quay are the kings of stop-motion animation. These eccentric, identical twin surrealists have inspired filmmakers like Tim Burton and Fred Stuhr (the guy that did those Tool videos).  This video is a segment in a five-part series entitled “Stille Nacht”.  The Brothers Quay entire body of work is a must-see.

The dust has cleared, SXSW is long gone. No more lines, no more hating on people with badges, cops and record folk. No more text forwards to see Kanye. No more free junk during the day.
