Project Natal (pronounced “na-tall”(IPA: [naˈtal])) is the code name for a “controller-free gaming and entertainment experience” by Microsoft for the Xbox 360 video game platform. Based on an add-on peripheral for the Xbox 360 console, Project Natal enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller, through gestures, spoken commands,[1] or presented objects and images. The project is aimed at broadening the Xbox 360′s audience beyond the hardcore base.[2] Project Natal was first announced June 1 at the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo. Microsoft said that over 1000 development kits began shipping to game developers that same day.[2] Microsoft has not revealed any price or release date information for Project Natal.

An approximately nine-inch (23 cm) wide horizontal bar[4] connected to a small circular base with a ball joint pivot, the Project Natal sensor is designed to be positioned lengthwise above or below the video display. The device features an “RGB camera, depth sensor, multi-array microphone, and custom processor running proprietary software”, which provides full-body 3D motion capture, facial recognition, and voice recognition capabilities. The Project Natal sensor’s microphone array enables the Xbox 360 to conduct acoustic source localization and ambient noise suppression, allowing for things such as headset-free party chat over Xbox Live.

The depth sensor consists of an infrared projector combined with a monochrome CMOS sensor, and allows the Project Natal sensor to see in 3D under any lighting conditions.[1] Project Natal is reportedly based on software technology developed internally by Microsoft (gesture recognition, skeletal mapping,[5] facial recognition, voice recognition) and hardware technology acquired by time-of-flight camera developer 3DV Systems.[6][7][8] Before agreeing to sell all its assets in March 2009,[9] 3DV had been preparing a similar device, known as the ZCam.[10]

If I hear another news update or story on this Mexican/swine flu I will personally fly down to Mexico, find a little boy who has it and make sure every “news” reporter who has pushed this story contracts the damn thing. Fred Segal, the upscale Los Angeles boutique that has been a Southern Cali fashion staple since 1985, will be starring in its very own reality TV series on Bravo this fall. Known for the most aggressive sales girls in town (“Those ‘Free City’ sweatpants make your package look soooooo big, handsome”), Fred Segal should make a great celebrity and drama-filled setting.

According to Reuters: “The show in development will document the daily drama at Santa Monica clothing retailer Fred Segal. The untitled docu-series will focus on the oft-stressed and competitive sales team as they cater to well-to-do customers who demand the latest in clothes, shoes, accessories and beauty products.”

So because Nike obviously hates Kobe Bryant and refuses to put out a good commercial with him in it, we have to settle for their work with LBJ and Tiger Woods. Nike’s “The Good Life” commercial is welcoming back Tiger to the PGA. And as usual, it’s amazing.

In case you were wondering, my vision for the Kobe commercial involves slow motion, close ups, killer cross-overs, a 1,000 piece orchestra and one high-arching fadeaway that splashes all over the net and water flies everywhere. And thats the tag line….”Splash.” You’re welcome Nike.

Wow! 50 already? Well just shy of it to be exact. The half a century turnover for the plastic icon falls on March 9th. However, the fashion world has decided to celebrate a bit early. This Saturday (Valentine’s Day!) during Fashion Week, she (as in Barbie stand-ins) will get to strut down the catwalk in 50 different ensembles created by some of the most fabulous designers. Some of the styles from the show will head over to the Bloomingdale’s flagship store, where they will be put out for display.

All I hope is that those model stand-ins don’t resemble your current picture. I mean, no offense Barbie, but…… (::whispering::) you’re looking a little old.

Well maybe he hasn’t quite joined yet but he did just start a Google channel and just this week the (AP) released a statement saying social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace can foster friendships and understanding, but they also can isolate people and marginalize others. The release went on to say, Benedict welcomes as a “gift” new technologies such as social networking sites, saying they respond to the “fundamental desire” of people to communicate. But he also warns that “obsessive” virtual socializing can isolate people from real interaction and deepen the digital divide by excluding those already marginalized. He urges producers to ensure that the content respects human dignity and the “goodness and intimacy of human sexuality.” What if the Pope had a secret weird obsession with Facebook… how weird would it be if he friend requested your little brother?

February 17, 2009: The day the world will end. OK, maybe not the world, but definitely the good old days of analog television. Chances are you have seen a commercial in recent months featuring an old person letting you know you need new gear to convert your tube to digital so that you don’t risk a blackout. According to the LA Times, “People with cable, satellite or phone company TV services will continue to receive broadcast stations. But those who rely on antennas must have either a newer TV with a digital receiver or get a converter box. No-frills versions of those boxes cost $40 to $70. To offset the expense, the federal government allocated $1.5 billion to provide households with up to two $40 coupons.” Anywho, despite an additional $2 billion budget aimed at educating folks (read: grandma and grandpa) about the transition and for coupons to buy the necessary conversion boxes, we have a real problem on our hands apparently. An estimated 7.7 million households risk their screens going dark, and as expected, there is plenty of finger-pointing going around over how the transition has been handled. The biggest culprit: the government, naturally.

I dont think I need to wake up and hear about how Oprah has tipped 230 pounds on the scale. Yes you were fat, got skinny, and are now fat again. Good luck in 2009, but note to CNN: Oprah’s weight is not news worthy, and unless she wants to go on NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” the rest of us skinny people don’t want to hear her sob stories. I know homegirl is powerful enough to make me disappear for talking about her, but seriously–if she wants to lose weight, she could always get on-board with my 24-time-a-week Chipotle diet…hold the sour cream.
