I said good day, sir!!! Yet another MUSIC FRIDAY early, my friend. Heading to LA on Friday so I put this weeks together in advance. I’m on a bit of a summer soundtrack roll these days so hopefully we can all benefit from that. This one evolves like the day does from morning to beddy-by. It works it’s way through the first 10 tracks with a more mystic indie kind of attitude as well as a  few electro pop cuts sprinkled in. It’s filled with catchy lil numbers and jammy guitar fueled spiderwebs, as well as a few trancy tom-tom thumbing tantrums. Enough to mess up your buddies ironic facial hair. In the distant future where a corrupt, crime-thirsty legal system rules outer space with a titanium fist, the last hope for our galaxy lies on the shoulders of one man, Gripp Handalsun (Treat Williams).  Armed only with his good-looks, a laser-proof briefcase, and a hunger for justice, Gripp must come face-to-face with the underbelly of space law. Now, in the most harrowing case of his life, Gripp takes on the menacing Prosecutor X5000 (Wesley Snipes), the only District Attorney in the Galaxy with a biracial chip on his shoulder the size of Jupiter.  Descended from an African-American father and Robotic-American mother, X5000’s courtroom tactics are as icy cold as the blood and oil mixture running through his veins.  Together with the evil Judge George Jurj (Brian Dennehy), X5000 devises new ways to bend the law to its breaking point.  Even the hapless Bailiff-209 (Jeff Goldblum) is under the spell of Judge Jurj and the afro-cyborg prosecution.  At every turn, defeat seems certain, until Gripp must come to grips with some of his own inner demons in outer space.   Will the long robotic arm of the law finally bring justice to the galaxy or will Gripp find himself on the wrong side of the law . . . of gravity? Have you ever ridden a pegasus? I did once when I was young. Not only was it a mythological creature I was riding, but it was the rarest kind of pegasus. This one in particular was born with NO wings. I know…awesome right! Well this week I have not only a playlist, but what I call a “mixlist.” All the songs are connected in some way or another like a DJ mix. I wouldn’t call it a DJ mix cause it isn’t a dance mix it twists and turns through funky, electro, spacy, fast and slow. How did your environment/family influence your music?

Living on the west coast has been a huge influence on my music.  When I was in school, I lived in an town homes complex with a lot of my friends, who also happen to be great musicians.  Living in an environment where you’re surrounded by inspiring, great people was such a treat for me.  Where I live now, I’m more in the country, and it also is playing a part in how I’ve been writing.  The new Two Bicycles record I’m writing is very isolated and feels much more rural.

Was there a particular band/song/sound that made you want to create your own music?

It’s always been Daft Punk.  From day one, they’ve been the band that’s continually been an inspiration.  I was in Grade Six when I first heard “Da Funk”, and they’ve been my favourite band ever since.

What ingredients make up the Teen Daze sound or what common threads will continue to run through your music that will define it as Teen Daze material?

I have a pretty pop-minded mentality when it comes to my songwriting, so I feel like that could be the thing that defines it.  Even though I may create music that’s influenced by more less-mainstream artists/genres, I feel like I’ll always come back to that pop songwriting style.

If you had to come up with a three word name/description for your genre of music what would it be?

How do you decide what constitutes Teen Daze material and what would fit better as Two Bicycles
material?

Two Bicycles stuff has always been songs that are more organically based, songs that I’ve written on a guitar, or piano.  The Teen Daze stuff normally comes from a much more electronic based origin.  The lines are starting to blur though, and that shows up on Beach Dreams, and even more so on the Teen Daze LP that I’m writing right now.

I know the lo-fi/beach stuff inspired your new e.p. What experiences/sounds/trends are influencing
future Teen Daze output?

I’m trying to take as much influence from literature as I can.  For the most part, I tend to take a lot of my influences from the music I listen to, and I’m trying to challenge myself to draw from something else.  This is done mostly in an attempt to create something new, something that doesn’t just sound like the band I’ve been listening to that week.

I’ve been taking a lot of ideas from C.S. Lewis’ Science Fiction Trilogy (Out Of The Silent Planet, Perelandra, That Hideous Strength).  I love the idea of creating a new world with art, and that’s definitely where this new record is heading.

How did you get connected with Houses?

The internet!  We started emailing, and before we knew it we were working on tracks together!  He’s an amazing guy, and it warms my heart to see him get all the praise and attention he deserves.

What have you seen in the past few days that really made it sink-in that, “Oh, I AM in Texas!”?

BBQ, huge billboards advertising churches and just Jesus in general, 6 through 10 gallon hats, a LOT of flat land.

Do you think there’s a threat of “well-established” blogs gaining too much sway over listeners’ tastes or listeners becoming too lazy by relying too heavily on blogs for taste-making?

Yes and no; I’ve come to find that the people behind the blogs are really just music fans themselves.  A site like Pitchfork has an overwhelming amount of power, and yet the people that I’ve met that work for Pitchfork are amazing people.  I think people are always going to look to others to gauge what’s cool and what’s not, and for the time being it’s these blogs.  But everything is temporary, I’ve come to find.  So for now, we should appreciate the fact that these tastemakers are good people.

In the epic battle of Gorilla vs. Bear, who are you secretly pulling for, Gorilla or Bear, and why?

Bear, hands down.  I live in the Pacific Northwest, so having seen some bears in my life, I can go with bear.
