I said good day, sir!!! Yet another MUSIC FRIDAY early, my friend. Heading to LA on Friday so I put this weeks together in advance. I’m on a bit of a summer soundtrack roll these days so hopefully we can all benefit from that. This one evolves like the day does from morning to beddy-by. It works it’s way through the first 10 tracks with a more mystic indie kind of attitude as well as a  few electro pop cuts sprinkled in. It’s filled with catchy lil numbers and jammy guitar fueled spiderwebs, as well as a few trancy tom-tom thumbing tantrums. Enough to mess up your buddies ironic facial hair. In the distant future where a corrupt, crime-thirsty legal system rules outer space with a titanium fist, the last hope for our galaxy lies on the shoulders of one man, Gripp Handalsun (Treat Williams).  Armed only with his good-looks, a laser-proof briefcase, and a hunger for justice, Gripp must come face-to-face with the underbelly of space law. Now, in the most harrowing case of his life, Gripp takes on the menacing Prosecutor X5000 (Wesley Snipes), the only District Attorney in the Galaxy with a biracial chip on his shoulder the size of Jupiter.  Descended from an African-American father and Robotic-American mother, X5000’s courtroom tactics are as icy cold as the blood and oil mixture running through his veins.  Together with the evil Judge George Jurj (Brian Dennehy), X5000 devises new ways to bend the law to its breaking point.  Even the hapless Bailiff-209 (Jeff Goldblum) is under the spell of Judge Jurj and the afro-cyborg prosecution.  At every turn, defeat seems certain, until Gripp must come to grips with some of his own inner demons in outer space.   Will the long robotic arm of the law finally bring justice to the galaxy or will Gripp find himself on the wrong side of the law . . . of gravity? 3D has been an on-again, off-again trend since the 1950’s. It was huge in the 50’s, then, it faded into obscurity. The 80’s saw a revival in 3D with the likes of Friday the 13th Part III, Jaws 3-D, and Captain EO. It popped up now and then through the 90’s. But the 2000’s have seen the most significant showing of 3D products yet (Avatar, ESPN 3D, Taschen 3D books, etc.). Many argue that 3D is finally here to stay. Even heavy hitters in the music biz have been jumping on the bandwagon, with Pitchfork recently producing its own Pitchfork 3D series. So, this [Music Friday] I’ve included a few recent stand-outs in the new wave of 3D. Slip on your red and blue lenses and enjoy.

Have you ever ridden a pegasus? I did once when I was young. Not only was it a mythological creature I was riding, but it was the rarest kind of pegasus. This one in particular was born with NO wings. I know…awesome right! Well this week I have not only a playlist, but what I call a “mixlist.” All the songs are connected in some way or another like a DJ mix. I wouldn’t call it a DJ mix cause it isn’t a dance mix it twists and turns through funky, electro, spacy, fast and slow. Last December I had the delight of catching Mike Diaz and the boys, also known as Millionyoung, at Mohawk. Among their EP’s and new LP they have a small yet strong body of work and they bring it to life amazingly on the stage. The set ventured through electric landscapes of winding ambient streams, cosmic funk progressions and smooth sail’n synths.  The live show brings out a more stomp-n-groov’n side of Millionyoung. I would strongly recommend catching them during SXSW this year. You won’t be disappointed. I got to throw a few questions his way  after letting the guys crash at my tiny pad. How did your environment/family influence your music? Your sound seems to be somewhat influenced by the tropical surroundings of Florida, is this a correct assumption?

- I really love my home, I wouldn’t say I intentionally try to write music that reflects that, but it does find it’s way into the music subconsciously.

Glitch art is nothing new.  People have been creating art from “glitches” (accidental imperfections in sound and video) for decades.  Musicians like John Cage, and filmmakers like Stan Brakhage intentionally sought out such flaws to emphasize the beauty within.  In recent years, music video directors have been exploiting the glitches created by VHS tapes, video feedback, and corrupted digital files to add nostalgic flare to music videos.  It’s a nostalgia that reflects the near-vintage sounds and cassette-only releases that these bands produce.

Ariel Pink- “Round and Round”

Flaming Lips’ lead man, Wayne Coyne, shot this video on his iPhone while on tour with Ariel Pink.  George Salisbury added the psychedelic effects to create one of the most mind-blowing videos of the year.  Streaming online does not do this video justice.  You have to sign-in on Vimeo.com and download it to watch its full resolution.

Neon Indian- “Mind, Drips”

Lars Larsen and Edward Leckie created a new technique, LZX Visionary, to produce this video’s swirling colors.  They call their new technology “an analog video synthesizer” that manipulates video like a musical synthesizer does for sound.  It’s similar to circuit bending, a technique long-used by glitch musicians.

Autre Ne Veut- “Soldier”

Luke Wyatt created this video with his technique called “Video Mulch”.  He described one part of his process by saying, “My VCR gets beat up with a size 13 docksider until it makes errors and the VHS tape spits up on itself.”  Its cut-and-pasted/datamoshed/feedback result makes a nice backdrop for Soldier’s slightly off-key melodies.

Chairlift- “Evident Utensil”

Ray Tintori created this video a couple of years ago, and stirred up some drama as Kanye West was releasing a video at the same time using the same glitch technique.  It really doesn’t matter, neither one of them used the technique first.  But I think this video was best at using the process called data-moshing, where certain pixels in the video freeze and become attached to images in following frames of video. You’ll see, just watch…
