[Filmaroid Wednesday] Philip-Lorca Dicorcia

My new favorite Photographer: Philip-Lorca Dicorcia has an incredible eye and absolutely stunning prints. I am specifically taken aback by his book A Storybook Life which showcases pictures all over the United States as well as Europe.

The disparate photographs assembled here were made over the course of twenty years. None of them were originally intended to be used in this book. By ordering and shaping them I tried to investigate the possibilities of narrative both within a single image and especially in relation to the other photographs. A Storybook Life is an attempt to discover the possibilities of meaning in the interaction of seemingly unrelated images in the hope that content can constantly mutate according to both the external and internal condition of the viewer, but remain meaningful because of it’s inherent, but latent content. The conscious and subconscious decisions made in editing the photographs is the real work of A Storybook Life. -Philip-Lorca diCorcia

With my recent revisitation of my own 35mm film camera, I have decided to showcase work every Wednesday beyond just Polaroid. Don’t worry though – I’ll still be shooting Polaroid. I’m really loving my new instax pola camera – especially loving the fact I can drive to the store and actually buy film for it. You may recognize this lovely lady from last week’s Polaroid Wednesday. I had been dying to go out on location and shoot so we found a couple great spots in East Austin to capture Alyssa. These were my favorite shots from the color film roll. Such a natural beauty she is!

“The photographs featured in this book tell the story of my search for authentic beauty…Rather than succumb to the perfect, yet ultimately artificial, beauty afforded by image retouching and manipulation, I wanted to bring authenticity back to modern fashion photography. The subject of this photographic project is a collection of 100 women shot at various locations throughout the world. The creative impulse was to reveal the subjective qualities of the models, to give voice and shape to their unique personalities. As my medium, I chose Polaroid film, as it represents an ideal counter-weight to the retouched visual language of our times. Polaroids are a real-time medium; they freeze moments in time as they occur, unmanipulated, unembellished and utterly spontaneous. The analog nature of this medium is almost anachronistic, yet it helps convey a sense of authenticity through the manner in which the image slowly appears and perfectly depicts reality, blemishes and all.”

[Polaroid Wednesday] Taos Pueblo

So I’m finally in Taos visiting Mista Shok! Today he took me to the the Old Native American Pueblo where I had the chance to snap some photos with my old 35mm film camera and of course my polaroid. Here are photos of a hand woven dreamcatcher and the top of the entrance to the town church. This place is so enchanting. Tonight we hit the road for LA. Wish us luck! :)

Today, I will be driving west all the way to Marfa, TX once again. It has been exactly one year since I’ve been in this enigmatic town. Although I’ve never been able to figure out what is so special about this place, I always return home knowing a part of me has changed. Below are examples of Impossible Project’s brand new PX Silver Shade Instant Film. It is a monochrome material in a limited First Flush Edition best used with the traditional sx-70 cameras. First Flush Film is an experimental material that will produce changing results depending on light conditions and temperature. The tones of the images produced are just beautiful. I can’t wait to order mine!

Dallas Film Festival: The Last Survivor

The Dallas film festival is just around the corner. I am sure most of you have already checked the Film Society website for a line up and realized the predicament that faces you. Soooooo many films, sooooo little time. With over 200 films showing in conjunction with the festival – it is physically impossible to view them all. Thus, tough decisions must be made. I will make this difficult time easier for you by suggesting a film that should definitely be added to your “must see” list.

The Last Survivor. It’s a documentary that deals with genocide in the 21st century. Sounds heavy, but the film has an uplifting underscore – following survivors and showing how they cope with the tragedy by working to raise awareness and response to mass atrocity crimes.

Righteous Pictures, a film production & social action company, is the team behind the making of the film. A group of the creative sorts – they consider themselves a collective of artists and social activists making films and new media projects as a way of sparking dialogue on the most critical issues of our times.

An artsy type myself, I believe in the power of creative thinking to provide real solutions for real problems in society. And since you all have proven yourselves socially aware and interested in the creative arts by following this blog – this film should be right up your ally.

The film is showing at the Angelika Monday april 12th @ 7:15pm & Wednesday april 14th @ 1:15 pm. While this may not be the typical “feel good” movie you like to pair with your bottle of Bordeaux and plastic cups from the bar at the Angelika, it will definitely make you want to “do good” – just wait to save the world until after your wine buzz goes away.

[Archive Tuesday] Joan Jett & The Runaways

This [Archive Tuesday], we look back at Joan Jett and The Runaways — an American all-girl teenage rock band that performed in the 1970s. The band is best known for the songs “Cherry Bomb”, “Queens of Noise”, “Rock n Roll”, “Neon Angels (On the Road to Ruin)”, and “Born to Be Bad.” This Friday, March 19, Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star in a biopic on the band, The Runaways.

[ &Transfer ] Color Correction Boutique

After the Atlantis Home/Sea of Shoes trunk show at V.O.D. on Thursday, the crew headed to the grand opening of the Dallas offices of &Transfer, the Southwest’s premier color correction boutique. The raw, industrial office space offered both amazing views of the Dallas skyline and a “virtual” demo of the color correction process. The general consensus was that this would be the coolest place in the City to work — now if only any of us had any idea to work the super-intense editing machinery….
