It has been exactly one year since I’ve been in this enigmatic town. Although I’ve never been able to figure out what is so special about this place, I always return home knowing a part of me has changed. The Dallas film festival is just around the corner.  I am sure most of you have already checked the Film Society website for a line up and realized the predicament that faces you.  Soooooo many films, sooooo little time.  With over 200 films showing in conjunction with the festival – it is physically impossible to view them all.  Thus, tough decisions must be made.  I will make this difficult time easier for you by suggesting a film that should definitely be added to your “must see” list.

The Last Survivor. It’s a documentary that deals with genocide in the 21st century.  Sounds heavy, but the film has an uplifting underscore – following survivors and showing how they cope with the tragedy by working to raise awareness and response to mass atrocity crimes.

Righteous Pictures, a film production & social action company, is the team behind the making of the film.  A group of the creative sorts – they consider themselves a collective of artists and social activists making films and new media projects as a way of sparking dialogue on the most critical issues of our times.

An artsy type myself, I believe in the power of creative thinking to provide real solutions for real problems in society.  And since you all have proven yourselves socially aware and interested in the creative arts by following this blog – this film should be right up your ally.

The film is showing at the Angelika Monday april 12th  @ 7:15pm & Wednesday april 14th @ 1:15 pm.  While this may not be the typical “feel good” movie you like to pair with your bottle of Bordeaux and plastic cups from the bar at the Angelika, it will definitely make you want to “do good” – just wait to save the world until after your wine buzz goes away.

There will be live performances outside on the reflecting pond by locals Seryn and The Orbans, and of course, the band everyone is talking about, Warpaint. You can also see a special screening of I Shot Andy Warhol, a film tracing the madness of radical-feminist genius Valerie Solanas, and her life leading to the moment she shot pop-art icon Andy Warhol in 1968. Experience the special exhibition Andy Warhol: The Last Decade by taking part in special activities throughout the evening including conceptual projects, interactive events, spotlight tours, and art explorations in the galleries. Cash bars will be available from 6 p.m. until last call at 11:30 p.m. Grub at Café Modern the outdoor Modern Grill from 6 to 11 p.m.

The DALLAS Film Society partnered in 2006 to create the AFI DALLAS International Film Festival. The DALLAS International Film Festival is one of the fastest growing film festivals in the world. Named by Movie Maker Magazine as one of the “25 Festivals Worth the Entry Fee,” the Festival has gained the reputation as the Filmmaker’s Festival for its stellar hospitality and dedication to the art.

This [Archive Tuesday], we look back at Joan Jett and The Runaways — an American all-girl teenage rock band that performed in the 1970s. The band is best known for the songs “Cherry Bomb”, “Queens of Noise”, “Rock n Roll”, “Neon Angels (On the Road to Ruin)”, and “Born to Be Bad.” This Friday, March 19, Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star in a biopic on the band, The Runaways.

As a special promotion, we are going to be giving away prize pack at random to someone who comments on this post! After the Atlantis Home/Sea of Shoes trunk show at V.O.D. on Thursday, the crew headed to the grand opening of the Dallas offices of &Transfer, the Southwest’s premier color correction boutique. The raw, industrial office space offered both amazing views of the Dallas skyline and a “virtual” demo of the color correction process. The general consensus was that this would be the coolest place in the City to work — now if only any of us had any idea to work the super-intense editing machinery….

These colorful images were made with original 35mm slides printed on to polaroid 600 film with a daylab enlarger and SX-70 base. I didn’t even know you could do that! Amazing.
