Once upon a time (1984) in a Southwestern US city (Dallas) a very famous designer (Phillippe Starck) created a namesake nightclub (Starck Club) that boasted some of the biggest names of the time (Stevie Nicks, Grace Jones, Robert Plant).
By all accounts, Starck Club was the definition of 80’s excess and perversion — it boasted a [...]

This day. 1945.
Joe Rosenthal takes a photograph depicting five United States Marines and US Navy Corpsmen raising a US Flag during the battle of Iwo Jima in WWII. This became the only photograph to win the Pulitzer Prize for Photography in the same year as its publication and possibly the most reproduced photograph of all time.
Talk [...]

This [Archive Tuesday], we remember President John F Kennedy. Yesterday, on President’s Day, the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza in Dallas released never before seen footage taken on the fateful day of his assassination. The film was shot by 15-year-old student William Ward Warren on Nov. 22, 1963 and shows the arrival of Air [...]

Fifty years ago today, February 9, 1960, chairman of the Coors Brewing Company Adolph Coors III disappeared shortly after leaving his home (below) for a 9 am meeting with brewery execs in Golden, Colorado. After a brief search that morning, his glasses and truck were found nearby — followed by a $500,000 ransom demand found the [...]

Just got a VHS player this week after many years without one. I recently started taking an exploitation film course at school so stay tuned for weekly recommendations of old classics (basically, anything I watch). This week: Russ Meyer’s 1961 film, “Eve and The Handyman”.

In June 1965, Life Extension Society (LES) put out an ad to freeze one person stating “the Life Extension Society now has primitive facilities for emergency short term freezing and storing our friend the large homeotherm (man). LES offers to freeze free of charge the first person desirous and in need of cryogenic suspension…” James [...]

Getting lost in Amsterdam sucks — except for the occasional “wow this store is f*cking amazing!” moment. MENDO is one of those stores. I was blown away by both the design of this boutique bookstore and the sheer number of one-0f-a-kind giant photo books they had on hand. One book that caught my eye was [...]

My fabulous dad. Taken off of a private island in the Bahamas in the 1970s.

As the gateway to both Grand Teton National and Yellowstone National Parks, Jackson Hole offers some of the most breathtaking views in the entire country. The name “hole” derives from language used by early trappers or mountain men, who primarily entered the valley from the north and east and had to descend along relatively steep slopes, [...]

For [Archive Tuesday], we remember this day in 1980 when the man/the legend/the icon John Lennon was fatally shot outside of the Dakota Apartments in New York City. On the morning of 8 December 1980, photographer Annie Leibovitz went to Ono and Lennon’s apartment to do a photo shoot for Rolling Stone. Later that evening, a crazed ‘fan’ [...]

This is a picture I stumbled across in my uncles house this past weekend. The picture was taken circa 1950 at the Caspian Sea during one of their holiday getaways. Got to love the pet goat.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we bring you President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor, carving a traditional turkey. Love the bowtie. I wonder what President Obama and his table will look like…

For this edition of [Archive Tuesday], it is only fitting we pay homage to one of the most beautiful actresses of Hollywood’s Golden Era, Rita Hayworth. Regarded by many as the era’s greatest sex symbol, Rita appeared in over 61 films in her 37 year career, but none was more memorable than Gilda. Her performance [...]

There is just something way more classy, suave and just plain heavy about the 70’s. Exhibit A: This photo taken on March 24, 1979 of Papa Gilberto. The velvet bowtie; the wide-lapelled pinstripe suit; the ultimate moustache. Simply amazing. Big ups to the man who gave me life.

Last year I was given Poolside with Slim Aarons – a photo book that took me by surprise. Aarons, who was a famous American photographer at the age of 18, was enlisted in the US ARMY as a combat photographer earning a purple heart during WWII. After leaving the war, Aarons moved to California and in his words, started [...]

For the [Archive Tuesday] before Halloween, we naturally have to bring you a classic horror film. Back in 1967, Terence Young and legendary actress Audrey Hepburn gave us the classic, Wait Until Dark — a dark film about a blind woman, thugs, and a nonstop search for heroine. Hepburn was nominated for both an Oscar and [...]

One of my favorite actresses/models is none other than Miss Isabella Rosselini. Daughter to Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman and Italian director Roberto Rossellini, Isabella has been in the spotlight her whole life. She has been married to Martin Scorsese and dated Gary Oldman and David Lynch. If you are a fan of Lynch, like I am, you [...]

I thought I’d make one of my first posts about what I love most, photography, and a person who has had a great influence on me, Allan Tannenbaum. I first heard his name in an interview with Mark of TheCobraSnake.com and instantly looked him up. Tannenbaum, born in New Jersey, has been a world-renowned photographer for the past 50 years and most [...]

OK, so this picture wasn’t exactly taken in the 1970’s, but whats a few dozen years here and there, right? This disposable-camera-era snapshot of me and a couple friends on Pacific Breach in San Diego, CA (2001) had been sitting in a frame in my old apartment for a while and almost everyone that comes [...]

[Archive Tuesday] will attempt to dip into the past and revive some old classics. This week we visit Sophia Loren who is an Academy Award winner and a true 60’s international icon. Ms. Loren hails from Italy and is one of the most beautiful actresses of her time.
