[Filmaroid Wednesday] Philip-Lorca Dicorcia

My new favorite Photographer: Philip-Lorca Dicorcia has an incredible eye and absolutely stunning prints. I am specifically taken aback by his book A Storybook Life which showcases pictures all over the United States as well as Europe.

The disparate photographs assembled here were made over the course of twenty years. None of them were originally intended to be used in this book. By ordering and shaping them I tried to investigate the possibilities of narrative both within a single image and especially in relation to the other photographs. A Storybook Life is an attempt to discover the possibilities of meaning in the interaction of seemingly unrelated images in the hope that content can constantly mutate according to both the external and internal condition of the viewer, but remain meaningful because of it’s inherent, but latent content. The conscious and subconscious decisions made in editing the photographs is the real work of A Storybook Life. -Philip-Lorca diCorcia

With my recent revisitation of my own 35mm film camera, I have decided to showcase work every Wednesday beyond just Polaroid. Don’t worry though – I’ll still be shooting Polaroid. I’m really loving my new instax pola camera – especially loving the fact I can drive to the store and actually buy film for it. You may recognize this lovely lady from last week’s Polaroid Wednesday. I had been dying to go out on location and shoot so we found a couple great spots in East Austin to capture Alyssa. These were my favorite shots from the color film roll. Such a natural beauty she is!

“The photographs featured in this book tell the story of my search for authentic beauty…Rather than succumb to the perfect, yet ultimately artificial, beauty afforded by image retouching and manipulation, I wanted to bring authenticity back to modern fashion photography. The subject of this photographic project is a collection of 100 women shot at various locations throughout the world. The creative impulse was to reveal the subjective qualities of the models, to give voice and shape to their unique personalities. As my medium, I chose Polaroid film, as it represents an ideal counter-weight to the retouched visual language of our times. Polaroids are a real-time medium; they freeze moments in time as they occur, unmanipulated, unembellished and utterly spontaneous. The analog nature of this medium is almost anachronistic, yet it helps convey a sense of authenticity through the manner in which the image slowly appears and perfectly depicts reality, blemishes and all.”

Sorry for the late post tonight but life has been incredibly wild and exhausting lately. The highlight of of all this excitement definitely goes to the look of shock and awe on our good friend Tyler’s face when Los and I made a surprise appearance to his surprise birthday party at the beautiful Belmont Hotel in Dallas Friday night. To top it off, we got to celebrate Los’s birthday at the stroke of midnight too! I couldn’t be happier celebrating the birth of two of my favorite Libra men TOGETHER in the same room. Los and Tyler – I love you guys <3

Yesterday was quite the busy day for the Studio Gold team plus all the wonderful ladies involved in the BLEACH online crew. Last night we shot the Fall set part 1 for BLEACH and am very excited to see it all come together at the end of next month! These gals never cease to impress me. Here is a shot of one of the models, Ashley, taking a smoke break outside before we got started. [Archive Tuesday] I’m Going to Jackson

In 1967, Johnny Cash and June Carter won a Grammy Award in the Best Country & Western Performance, Duet, Trio Or Group (vocal or instrumental) category for the song “Jackson“. A year later in 1968, Johnny Cash proposed to Carter during a live performance at London Arena in London, Ontario (which many of you probably remember depicted in the feature film about mister Cash - Walk the Line with Joaquin Pheonix and Reese Witherspoon). June finally said yes and the couple married in March of 1968.

One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite duos. Such a classic. Johnny and June were definitely ‘hotter than a pepper sprout’.
